In the lead-up to the regeneration of Melbourne’s iconic Rialto towers, we were invited to address the appearance of unsightly hoardings dominating the public areas during its construction. In an effort to create a positive ambiance and connect with the building’s Italian heritage, the idea of utilising Venetian masks was conceived. The mask’s represented the perfect metaphor. Covering the building, their graphic shapes were filled with a variety of textures which connected to the new commercial, retail and business offers that the new precinct would offer. When the hoardings are taken down, just like the removal of a mask – the new face of Rialto will be revealed.
